This 2011 one of the most famous boulevards in Berlin meets 125 years: Kufürstendamm or Kudamm, well known by Berliners. The street takes its name from the ancient Kurfürsten (Electors) of the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1873, the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck wrote a letter to Cabinet Secretary in which first presented the idea to develop a boulevard in the street. Finally in 1875, Bismarck succeeded in imposing his idea that included the widening of the roadway more than 53 meters wide. In 1886 he began developing the work. 
When the city was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin, with the building of the Berlin Wall, the Kurfürstendamm became the best known shopping street of West Berlin, where the Europa Center, the Hotel Kempinski, theaters, shops, shoe shops and the Kaufhaus des Westens (known as KaDeWe, Berlin's version of Harrods in London).
